调查的主要内容包括：调查对象的姓名、性别、受教育程度、迁移流动情况、婚姻状况、生育情况等。调查将以调查员入户开展调查的方式进行。

此次人口固定样本跟访调查主要目的是反映调查对象在较长时期里人口基本特征和生活质量的变化，同时也是常规人口统计制度的重要补充。

当前，我国人口统计调查制度主要分为三种，分别为人口普查、人口抽样调查以及固定样本跟访调查。这三种调查方式相互区别，又相互补充，为我国人口高质量发展提供了有力数据支撑。

据国家统计局人口和就业统计司司长王萍萍介绍，人口普查，在逢0的年份进行，对每一个家庭、每一个人进行登记调查，可以反映每一个家庭的情况，在逢5的年份进行百分之一人口抽样调查，在其他年份进行千分之一人口抽样调查。“人口固定样本跟访调查，就是对于普查的每一个人，我们按照一定的比例，现在是大约万分之二这个比例来进行抽样，抽取这个家庭和人口，每年对这些样本进行调查，来反映一定时期内他们人口特征，以及家庭生活质量的改变。”

人口固定样本跟访调查在国际上已有不少国家正在开展，作为一项长期人口调查，有些国家已经持续调查长达数十年。2023年，我国根据第七次人口普查结果也建立了人口固定样本跟访调查，每年抽取30万人，一年分两次调查。

相较于其他人口统计方式，人口固定样本跟访调查有着许多优势，在调查对象的选取上，不同于人口抽样调查先通过抽取住房样本，再对住房中的人口进行调查，固定样本跟访调查是直接抽取住户样本进行调查，同时，年度间调查对象基本保持不变，可以更好地持续反映人口的自然变动和迁移流动，从长期看，可以反映不同特征家庭的代际传导现象。

王萍萍表示：“随着数据的积累，可以反映更多家庭，从爷爷奶奶到爸爸妈妈到孙子一辈，他们的人口状况，还有生活质量的变化。数据积累得越长，调查的学术价值就更多，同时也为我们国家制定人口决策提供更多的参考。”
